Diplopia comes from the Greek word διπλόος, (diploos) which means double, and ὄψ, ὀπός (opsis) which is equal to sight, this word was taken from Greek to Latin to refer to a double sight. Diplopia is a disease in which the organ of sight is affected, either the left eye or the right eye. In this condition, the perception of images is processed twice and this is due to a possible failure of the nerves of the eye. because the brain is causing a disturbance. In the study of this disease, it has been determined that the possible causes vary since they can be due to a cerebral contusion, excessive alcohol intake, brain tumors or situations of fatigue.

In the diagnosis process it is absolutely necessary that the affected person be treated by an ophthalmologist, who will carry out a series of tests that confirm the suffering of this disease; Among these tests that are performed on the patient are eye movement tests, the Hess screen test, the covered/uncovered eye test, and prism tests, among others.

There are two types of double vision; one of them is monocular diplopia, it is when the person has double vision in one eye and persists even when the other is covered, one of the main causes of this type of condition are: astigmatism, cataracts, dislocated lens and some retinal problems among others.

The second type is binocular diplopia and is related to the deviation of the eyes, since there may be a problem that affects the muscles that cover the eyeball, affecting the control of the direction of sight. In this second problem of double vision, it has been determined that in some cases it disappears with only the covering of one eye. It is usually caused by diabetes, trauma to the eye muscles, or myasthenia gravis.
